I live in the area of this bakery so it's very convenient, but after the past experiences I am steering far clear of here. My husband ordered a birthday cake years back, all chocolate with raspberry. Terrible. I don't base this review on that experience though. I worked at a bakery myself and know there are mediocre combinations at any place. I decided yellow cake was more their forte. So a few months back I stop to get some cake slices and pecan bars for dessert. No one in the store even acknowledged my presence. They all looked up from their work too. I know there is maybe only one salesperson on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, but the least the other cake decorators could do was say hello and that someone would be with my shortly. I walked out. At least 5 minutes past from the time I walked in the door . However, what really has sealed it for me was me walking by this past Sunday and 2 of the cake decorators were outside awaiting a person with a dog. They proceeded to pet the dog and the dog brushing against their aprons! To top it off the dog came in the shop with them. I was disgusted. It was not a service animal, had no harness, it was being petted which indicates pet. I am sorry to say that I will not even consider returning to this bakery.

I found this bakery after exhausting every recommend bakery to no avail. In frustration I called and blindly placed an order for a 3D cake shaped like an Oscar Award. First, they exceeded my expectations in the design of the cake. I couldn't have expected such an accurate depiction of what I wanted. Just the look of it was the highlight of the party. But, then we carefully watched the guest of honor cut the cake and I held my breath...then the first exclamation and thereafter was how great the cake tastes! IT WAS DELICIOUS! !!! I cant imagine anyone going wrong with choosing this bakery. The owner definitely has a passion for cakes. You want an impossible cake in design and most importantly taste. It is this place. Tell them Tomika sent you!

I ordered a half sheet of the chocolate chip pound cake with butter cream icing for a coworker's baby shower. I didn't want to spend too much since I had limited resources, but Sophisticakes knocked it out of the park! They worked with me to have a beautiful design and stayed well within my price range. When we served the cake at the shower, a hush came over the room as people tasted it. Then there were gasps- this is literally the most delicious cake on the planet. Without exception.

I went to Sophisticakes because I wanted to get my friend a cake for her 21st birthday. When I got there Suzanne was helping me. (Very nice lady ). I gave her some ideas as to what I was looking for and she suggested that she could sketch out a few designs for me and have me look at them to see which one would best fit my budget. She sent me an email the next day and I ordered the cake. Long story short, the cake was AMAZING ! Everyone loved it especially the birthday girl. So thank you very much Suzanne and everyone else who worked together to make such a wonderful cake for my friend. Best believe I will be coming back for more lol. You guys are at the top of my list.

They misspelled the name on a cake, even though the order form was correct. Since the caterer picked it up, the error was not found until the event was underway. When confronted by phone the next day they offered no refund or remorse.

I asked for a simple 10 inch red velvet cake with cream cheese icing and a simple zebra pattern on top with hot pink writing. What did I get? A bunch of black and white squiggly lines and pink writing. NOT WHAT I ASKED FOR AT ALL. When I ordered it and paid for it they were more than happy to do it. "Sure we can do it. No problem. Whatever you want." Seriously, all they had to to do was put black strips of icing across the cake; the cream cheese was already on there!!!! How difficult would that have been? Absolute disgrace that a bakery can't put simple black and white stripes on a cake. Maybe because I didn't get the $114 cake they wanted to sell me first; they intentionally messed up the cheaper cake. It wouldn't surprise me. DO NOT GO HERE! You've been warned.

Definitely a huge fan of Sophisticakes baked goods! I've had their cupcakes, cake cake, Cinnamon buns, cookies...all scrumptious and delicious! I am a HUGE fan of the Chocolate Salted Caramel cupcakes! I got a WAD of caramel under my icing and it appeared to be rolled in salty goodness...I've only been here 6 or 7 times, but have never run into any of the issues the 1 star reviewers have had. I guess you could ask them when the cakes were made, but I've never had a complaint from anything I've purchased there. As with any good bakery, it can be expensive...especially when you can't make up your mind and start sampling everything! But if you have a special event, stop by and check them out. I do recommend you call a couple days before if it is a big event or a big holiday is coming up as that is busy time at Sophisticakes!

I ordered a cake for a bridal shower a couple weeks ago and had an idea of what I wanted but nothing too specific. Everyone was so nice and friendly and very helpful. I talked to two girls there and we came up with a design. The end result was beautiful! Exactly what I had hoped for! And it tasted just as good as it looked! I ordered the chocolate chip pound cake with vanilla butter cream icing...it was out of this world! It was a big hit and everyone is still raving about it. I can't say enough good things about them. I highly recommend Sophisticakes and I'm sure they got a lot of future clients from the shower!

We got a birthday cake here for my girlfriends fathers birthday. It was a chocolate chip pound cake with buttercream icing. We also tried their red velvet cupcakes. The cupcakes were good, but I have had better. The icing was a little too sweet for my taste and the cake itself was dry. The birthday cake was better. I was surprised that the chocolate chips were not baked into the batter of the cake itself, but we're placed in the icing layer between the cakes. The icing was not quite as sweet as the cupcake, and hate a good taste. I will go back and give them another shot.

My absolute favorite go to place for cakes! Adorable cupcakes and cookies. Everything is fresh and tastes amazing!!! I'll be hiring them to do my wedding cake in a few years! Fantastic pound cake and amazing buttercream!

I had a wonderful experience here when I had to order a cake last minute. My dad ended up in the hospital the week of his birthday. We wanted to do something really special for him since he was not set to be released till the day after. My mom was recommended this place by a friend so I called them up and apologetically asked if there was any way they could have a cake ready the next day. (Their site says to give 7 days notice, especially on weekends and in their busy months, which is now). I explained the design and was told to email the picture I wanted. It was ready by noon the next day, which was his birthday. My dad is a Seinfeld fan so the cake said "Happy Birthday Anti-Dentite". It was perfect, exactly how I wanted it, and he loved it. I don't really like cake but everyone raved about it, including the hospital staff who got to finish the rest after my family ate. The staff was extremely friendly and actually got the reference haha. They let my sister and I use the bathroom after our long drive to Philly. I will definitely keep them in mind for future special occasions.

I ran into Sophisticakes at the last minute. Right before closing time, I came in. The woman behind the counter was very pleasant and courteous even though it was closing time. This was the 4th bakery I went to this evening. One was closed down, one closed early, and the third one looked dingy and dirty. I tried a variety of cupcakes, cookies, biscotti, and other desserts. My fiancé had a craving so that's why I was on such a search. She really liked the desserts. Personally, I thought they all were dried out and nothing exciting. I'm a huge dessert fan and for me to take one bite and put it down is a huge deal. Not if sure I will go back or not. I guess you don't know until you try.

This is one of those places where everything generally looks better than it tastes. They do create cakes that are beautiful to look at. However I have found their cupcakes and cakes to generally be dried out, not moist, as if they have been sitting around for several days. They load the small cupcakes up with too much icing so that it overpowers the cake. I don't believe the quality is any better than you'd get in the grocery store, but it's okay.

I had a phenomenal experience ordering a custom cake from Sophisticakes this past weekend. I went in a week prior to get a quote. I can't remember who helped me but she was so friendly and helpful. She asked me what I had in mind for my friend's bridal shower cake, showed me pictures of cakes they'd done before, and figured out a solution for my budget and number of guests. All this took only about 10 minutes. They're very flexible with opening early if you need the cake before opening hours, and the whole process was totally seamless. The cake was exactly what I was hoping it would be. I chose the chocolate chip pound cake with buttercream icing, and the guests were thrilled with it. Everyone kept asking where it came from and couldn't believe it was my neighborhood bakery. Several guests were literally smiling as they savored every bite, and several also went back for seconds. Many wanted to take home a leftover piece for someone at home to try. Everyone agreed the cake was an absolute highlight of the party. Basically, there was nothing but rave reviews. This cake only cost us $80, and it was estimated to serve 24. We had 22 at our party, and there was plenty leftover, so I guess we cut the slices a little smaller. I would order a custom cake again from them in a heartbeat.

I've heard a lot about Sophisticakes in recent years but was always disappointed with their cakes at parties I've attended. I went in today to purchase a dozen cupcakes. Upon entering shortly after the bakery opened there were about 6 bakers and workers there who simply looked at me and said nothing. No one said, "Good morning" or even a simple "Hello." They all just looked at me. I thought about how I would be fired for that at my job but chalked it up to them maybe not being morning people...despite the fact that they are bakers. A nice woman finally greeted me and gave me my dozen cupcakes ($38 is a bit pricey but my friend loves them). I will say that the people who like the dense, not sweet and thick textured cake did like the cupcakes but the rest of us did not. There isn't enough joy in their cakes for me.

You know you've found a gem when the custom cake decorator gets a happy gleam in her eye My new favorite bakery for truly delicious, creative and beautiful custom cakes. They did an amazing job with Dearest Son's mad science birthday cake (the "goo" icing was a hit - looked like real slime). They put in a repeat performance with my latest "queen" birthday cake. Custom cakes are not cheap! The problem is that many "custom" places rely on fondant, putty, very dense cake and rice krispies. The result? Looks good, tastes meh. Not this place - real buttercream and moist, not overly dense cake. If you're looking for a custom cake, this is the place to go.

This was the best blueberry pie I've ever had! So fresh and delicious. Perfect with a little scoop of ice cream. I had to restrain myself from eating the whole thing in one sitting. Good eats!

I used to like their cakes & cupcakes, but recently ordered some cupcakes, and when I was waiting to get them (since they weren't ready for me), heard a lot! #1- they keep everything in the freezer... apparently, they stock the freezers then pull from there- you are NOT getting a freshly baked cake! They asked when they were going to be eaten & when I said the next day, the counter girl said "OK, that will give them time to thaw- ha ha"- OK, if I am paying that much, they should be FRESH! #2 When I was asking about a cake (which I ultimately ordered elsewhere, obviously), I dealt with a "designer" who had the vocabulary of an uneducated 12 year old who swore a lot. Now, I am very liberal, but when you work with customers, you have to be careful about that type of thing. Super unprofessional, and very, very much a turn off. #3 I didn't bother complaining to the owner, since I have seen her in action (while I was waiting forever for my cupcakes, she was in the midst of an argument with a customer on the phone & then hung up & talked about it with the other employees- at least I know where her employee got her cue for unprofessional behavior), but I will make sure everyone I know from the area goes elsewhere for their bakery needs... Don't wast your time- you can get pre-baked previously frozen dessert items elsewhere for much less...

I first visited Sophisticakes for a cake for my 5-year-old twin boys. They were into castles and Knights at the time. Kathy and her crew came up with the most incredible castle with turrets and dragons, even a drawbridge and moat! We had so many oohs and ahhs and wow! Once they tasted Kathys amazing butter cream icing they were completely blown away! That was 12 years ago and we have had a Sophisticake for every birthday since! While they are no longer having the big parties with every kid they know and no more theme cakes, over the years Kathy and her crew crafted Pokemon. Yu Gi Oh, SpongeBob, Spider-Man, Soccer fields, and a giant roller blade cake for a skating party! Now we just get cakes with their names. But a trip there always includes cake pops, cupcakes, cookies, and on the weekends their luscious sticky buns! Get your next cake there!

I was torn where to get the cake for my daughter's christening because while bakery cakes are beautiful to look at, they're usually too sweet for my taste. I decided to forgo my hesitance and order the cake from Sophisticakes and am I ever glad I did! Besides being almost too beautiful to cut, it was absolutely delicious!! I arrived at 9 am to pick it up and at 3 pm when we cut the cake it was still incredibly moist & fresh. Staff was very helpful and courteous and the bakery was very nice & clean. I will be using Sophisticakes for all future occasions and will definitely recommend to all!

The best wedding cake I have ever had in my life. They are known for their pound cakes and for good reason. Get the chocolate chip! Their customer service is accommodating and delightful. Best cupcake: Chocolate Salted Caramel.

Forgot to write on cake and would not give me a refund. I stated I would not be back as a customer, I have gotten multiple cakes there before, and they could have cared less. Their cake is good but the customer service is bad.

I moved in to the Drexelbrook apartments a few months ago, and had never had anything from Sophisticakes before then. Now I unfortunately can't get enough! I love the chocolate salted caramel cupcakes, the cannoli's, chocolate chip cookies, and their chocolate cake (which has the taste and texture of a brownie) is to die for. I have bought bakery items for many dinner parties and events since moving here a few months ago. A few weeks ago, I even went to a bridal shower where they had a cake from Sophisticakes all the way up in the Northeast. And everyone at the party ate multiple pieces it was just so good. As I said before, I can't get enough of this place --- unfortunate because I'm supposed to be on a diet right now.

Went here to bring a cake to friends after a last minute dinner invitation. The chocolate chip cheesecake was moist and not too sweet. Also bought a few cupcakes for the crew to try. The coconut one has a coconut flavored cake and was a bit larger than the salted caramel - a chocolate cake with a liquid caramel center, chocolate frosting with a caramel drizzle. The lemon drop was a lemon cake with complementary lemon frosting. All of them were cute and fresh but I am not one of these folks who are cupcake crazy. This just seems to be the "in" thing at the moment and easier for bakeries than the usual European pastries. Cupcakes were 2.75. The cheesecake was just shy of $20. Cheesecake was a good value - serve 10. The cupcakes, not so much.

Ordered and purchased a cake and smash cake for a first birthday. Cake was decorated as desired however when cake was cut open it was not the cake order I had placed and read back verified in the shop. I ordered chocolate chip pound which I've had before and is delicious . The cake received was a plain vanilla. I called the shop the next day and the manager for the shift apologized and read back my order to verify that I did order and pay for a chocolate chip pound . I was then asked for my contact information address included because the owner needed to be spoken to. but that I would receive something in the mail . Almost a month has gone by and no phone call or mail. I getting ready to order another cake for a November party however I may pass this was my first personal experience with sophisticakes and am disappointed with the lack of follow through. Ecspecially after spending $92 on cakes.

My wife and daughters have been going to this place for years and think its the best. The product had never been a problem, always first rate. But at times the customer service and their policy's really will hurt them at the end. The owner has to realize that the customer that's been coming there for years is loyal and the owner should be accommodating to the customer if possible. It's like the soup Kicthen, its your privilege to buy something from them and sadly they should know, it's the other way around. Hopefully they will get it or not. I gave them a 3 ....the food is a 4 and the customer service is a 2.

You know how people say "you get what you pay for"? This is SO the case with SophistiCakes Bakery. I have used them for most of our family celebrations and my friends and family are totally HOOKED. Yes, the prices for their made-from-scratch cakes and cupcakes are higher than if you went to your local grocery store but consider the difference in what you are getting and GIVING your guests. My kids all have a different "most favorite"....my oldest loves the cupcakes, my middle can't get enough of the fudge brownies and my little guy goes nuts for the peanut butter cup chocolate chip cookie. We are always greeted with a friendly hello and treated like we are part of the family. The counter help has always worked with me to find the perfect cake no matter the occasion...birthdays, showers, funeral gatherings, Sunday dinner dessert or a "just because" treat for my kids. SophistiCakes is MY only bakery and will continue to be my ONLY bakery. If you've never tried them, you won't be disappointed.

Extremely dissatisfied with the cake that was purchased for my son's first birthday. I called to discuss the errors and was placed on hold and told that I was wrong, the cake is fine and as I ordered. The shape was cut poorly and the colors were not even close to what I ordered. This place is overrated. Buyer beware. Its a lesson to me to always go with a high end bakery, and not a cheap bakery in the future.

We could not have been happier with our wedding cake. We got the chocolate chip pound cake and guests are still raving about it. I'd recommend Sophisticakes to any bride! We've also used them for parties, etc. and have been equally pleased.

Trying to plan a birthday party at a distance can be a challenge, to say the least. But I thought I had it made when I found Sophisticakes' website. The photos told me they could make beautiful cakes, and I felt it safe to assume they would taste as good as they look. The decorated cake photos showed a passionate attention to detail, but as it turns out this was totally misleading. I called and made an appointment, since I would be traveling into the area for two days only and had all my other appointments lined up. Kathy, the owner, was very personable on the phone and assured me she would have her designers come up with sketches prior to my appointment. I left my cell phone number in case anything came up and she needed to move the appointment. I did not hear from her and assumed we were still on. However, on the appointed day she was totally unprepared. This after my driving 250 miles! And Kathy KNEW I was driving 250 miles to meet with her. Okay, you are busy. I understand. But the look of utter annoyance on the owner's face when I showed up was not okay. And did I mention I can read lips? I know what she was saying to the counter girl back there, and it wasn't at all nice. In fact, it is the last thing you would say if you ever wanted to keep a customer. At that point I decided to cancel the cake order. The last thing I need is to worry about whether the cake will get lost again, leaving me with nothing to serve to my guests, and I certainly don't need a bunch of attitude along with it. My advice to Sophisticakes is to try to be grateful for the customers you have and not treat them as an annoyance. Companies who don't care about their business soon go OUT of business. And try to manage your paperwork a little better. Watching Kathy rummage around in stacks of paper all over the store looking for my order didn't do anything to inspire confidence in her business ability. It just looked inept and inefficient. And her excuses were totally lame.

Great cupcakes and cookies! I usually stop by on special occasions to grab some sweet treats for friends at work. The icing is not over-the-roof sweet, but sweet enough to satisfy your craving. The cakes are nice and moist. The staff is very helpful and nice. Cute neighborhood bakery. It seems like they do wedding & specialty cakes too!

I used to love this bakery. In fact, I was the cake pick up person for all my family events. Lately the cakes have been dry and maybe to make up for it they have been putting on way too much of the too-rich icing. The cakes weigh a tom and you have to scrape half the icing off to make the cake edible. The chocolate chip pound cake has the chips all at the top of the cake not throughout the cake. I understand that if you buy a cake from the case it could be day old but it shouldn't be that way if you have ordered and paid for it in advance.

We were planning to order a cake for my parents' 50th anniversary party, based on the wonderful cake they made for my son's graduation last year. However, when we went to inquire, the woman working was so disinterested and so very UNhelpful, we changed our plans. I would suggest that they show some interest in customer service instead of simply directing people to their website (in the form of a desktop plopped in the corner of their storefront). My mother (who is over 70 years old) found this especially offensive. In addition, the underage staff behind the counter had a lot of trouble controlling their foul language in front of the customers up front. Too bad, because their products are usually quite good!

Never had a bad experience or a bad cake here. I've used these guys for birthdays, bridal showers, graduation parties, you name it. Delicious cakes and cupcakes (chocolate chip pound cake with chocolate butter cream icing is to die for). They've always been extremely helpful when I've ordered and even though I live in the city, I tend to use these guys anyway because it is worth traveling to DelCo!
